Double Neck Guitar

January 9th, 2010 5:07 pm

A double neck guitar looks like a set of Siamese twins. With two separate and distinct necks and a single, wider-than-average body, the instrument really does appear to be two independent entities joined by a common body. This description is, in fact, not too far from the truth. The benefit of the double neck guitar is that it essentially allows the musician access to more than one instrument at a time. To take the most common example, consider the typical double neck guitar. This instrument has one neck with twelve strings and one with six. The musician can, at any point during his or her performance, choose to switch between the two necks. This freedom of choice allows him or her to double the kind of music he or she can produce. Hence, to play the double neck guitar is to essentially play two instruments not simultaneously, but at least back-to-back.

The concept of the double neck guitar is not a new one. Instruments similar to this have been around for at least a few hundred years. A double neck version of the Russian guitar, for example, was popular in the beginning of the 19th century. Today, however, double neck guitars are generally Western-style electric instruments. As mentioned, the most common models have twelve strings on the top neck and six strings on the bottom. However, some versions have six strings on one neck and only four on the other. Fretted instruments are most common, but sometimes only one neck will be fretted and the other fretless. In fact, almost any combination of guitar characteristics is possible with these instruments. Some models eve have three, four or five necks. Such guitars only increase the variety of music that can be played on a “single” instrument.

Although double neck guitars have traditionally been simply standard electric guitars, bass instruments have gained popularity in recent years. Double neck bass guitars are often tuned differently, an approach that significantly widens the player’s range. Other models vary the use of frets or the number of strings. A more unusual approach is to have a double neck instrument with one neck set up as a standard electric guitar and the other set up as a bass guitar.

The double neck guitar is, needless to say, rather startling in appearance. This no doubt contributes to its popularity with a number of musicians in famous bands. After all, not only does the double neck guitar allow the artist to increase his musical variety, it also ensures that a great number of people will be staring at his instrument. These musicians are usually bassists, and they include Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin, Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Slash of Guns N’ Roses, Richie Sambora of Bon Jovi and Eddie Van Halen of Van Halen.

It should be mentioned that while the harp guitar is a relative of the double neck guitar, the two instruments are not the same. The harp guitar features unstopped strings that are designed to be plucked like those of a harp. The double neck guitar’s strings, on the other hand, are invariably meant to be played like those of a guitar.

How to Present Yourself and Your Music – Creating a More Polished Presentation

October 21st, 2009 10:41 am

Whether you’re an indie musician looking for a gig or trying to entice a manager or record label, how you present yourself and your music is of great importance. Make your presentation brief and make it look good. Take the time to prepare, and create a polished presentation.

No one wants to take the time to read pages and pages of bio, no matter how interesting you might think it is. And no one wants to take the time to look at tons of pictures, and especially not poor quality ones. Silly pictures, or those that don’t even show the artist are most often poorly received. They want to see what you look like, plain and simple.

Include the following in your presentation –

If you’re a band, a good group shot, professional 8 X 10 black & white is best.

If you’re a solo act, a nice professional head shot works best, 8 x 10 black & white.

A one page bio is best. Make sure your contact info is on every page and piece of your press kit. Keep it clean and simple — easy to find and easy to read. Take time with your bio. Use spell check, make sure there are no typos. Your bio should be crisp, clean and organized. Don’t over do it with the links. One is enough. And make sure that you include your email & phone number.

Choose your music carefully. Don’t choose a slow song with a long drawn out intro. In fact watch any long intros, slow or fast. Even if it’s catchy and you just love it, if it’s too long, they’ll be gone before your song ever starts. Choose your catchiest tune, with the hippest intro. They can listen to the other one later, once they’re interested in you and your music.

Press clippings and concert dates — if you have them — are invaluable. Be sure to include them. If you have any particularly good concert dates coming up, include brief (factual only – no fluff or hype) info. If it’s a really good gig, send a complimentary ticket. Press clippings are gold even if they come from a small paper. Always include them.

Remember, whether you’re sending stuff by email or dropping it off in person, make it look good, professional and polished. Indie musicians are often much too casual with email. Don’t just slap together a quick email. If you don’t take it seriously, neither will the person at the receiving end.

Take time with how you present yourself and your music. Creating a polished presentation will pay off again and again and again. One last note — remember to update your bio! Keep concert dates current! Good luck!

Throwing a Karaoke Music Party

October 4th, 2009 10:54 am

A night of music and fun is the goal of a karaoke music party. With the right mix of people ready to sing their hearts out and plenty of food and drinks to keep things loose and relaxed, a karaoke party can quickly become one of the year’s best events. A karaoke party can also be perfectly paired with any other event, such as a birthday party, Christmas party or office party.

Supplies. Renting a karaoke party setup is simple, given the increased number of karaoke rental services in recent years. You can rent all the karaoke supplies you need, such as machines and karaoke CDs, when you host your own party. For larger events, consider hiring a karaoke DJ to do all the work and bring their own karaoke supplies. Most basic karaoke machines have a combo player and screen for the lyrics, plus microphones. Some have recording devices so you can preserve the musical memories forever. You can choose from a wide range of karaoke CDs as well. Add some great mood lighting, simple decorations for a stage area and you’re all set.

Location. Whether you host the karaoke party at home, at work or in a church, there are a few things to consider. Make sure there’s plenty of room for moving around and for the karaoke supplies to rest comfortably without risk of being kicked or stumbled over. Ensure there are enough outlets for the karaoke machine as well. Finally, there should be plenty of seating for the audience to kick back and listen, or jump up and party.

Invitations. Give guests a hint of the fun to come at your karaoke party. Use sheet music, old vinyl records or even CDs in cases to extend invitations. Make sure that when you are compiling the guest list that you include people you know will not be shy about singing. Consider a music theme night, such as “Welcome to the ’80s,” “The Grammy Awards” or “Rock Star.”

Food. Tie in everything to music when planning food for the karaoke party. Since many people will be moving up and down to and from the stage, plan on delicious finger foods, sandwiches and plenty of drinks to wash it all down. Try mini croissant ham and cheese sliders, chips and dip and music note cupcakes for dessert. Often a buffet-style setup works best for a karaoke party so guests can help themselves without missing a beat.

How Do I Copyright Music? The Simple Steps to Protect Your Work

June 2nd, 2009 10:53 am

Copyright law falls under the umbrella of Intellectual Property which also includes Patents, Trademarks, Industrial Design and Trade Secrets. Each one of these sectors deals with a different type of protection for various types of works.

When dealing with musical works, it’s important to understand what constitutes a musical work before we can determine how it is protected through copyright law. The Canadian Copyright Act (for example) defines musical works as: “any work of music or musical composition, with or without words, and includes any compilation thereof.”

Interestingly, not all “musical” works actually fall under this category with regards to registration. Some may fall under the categories of “Sound Recordings” or “Performers’ Performances”.

In order to establish which category your musical work should be registered in, you must determine exactly what you are trying to protect. Some examples of what may be protected include:

a) lyrics: protected as a literary work
b) musical composition in any format: protected as a musical work
c) a specific recording of a song: protected as a sound recording
d) if you are a singer, your specific recorded performance of a song: protected as a performer’s performance

Now that you have determined which category your music falls into, let’s look at how to protect the copyright.

A common misconception is that people need to pay a third party to copyright their music.
However – the exclusive right of copyright (including the rights to produce, reproduce, distribute and publish the work) is automatically granted under Copyright Law to the author of a work once it is put in a fixed form.

In other words, when you record an original musical composition that you created onto a CD, it is copyrighted and you own the rights. However, unless you can prove you are the original creator of the musical work, you may run into expensive and time-consuming legal problems defending your work in the event of infringement.

This is why registering your work is often recommended, especially in our digital era where music is often showcased on websites and accessed by millions of people.

What registering a copyright does is it creates third party time-stamped proof of the time of creation. As such, should someone infringe on your work, you will have a registration certificate proving your work was completed before theirs. Without the registration, it can be tricky coming up with acceptable proof that you created the song first.

For instance, let’s say I create a musical composition and play if for a friend who is also a musician. They then (not intentionally) create a new song, and accidentally steal my melody. They finish their song, register it with a copyright registration service, and get picked up by a label. Even though I was the first one to make the song, it might be very difficult for me to prove that I played them the song before they made their composition if I did not first register the work.

As such, to build proof of your ownership (and to maintain friendships), it’s generally a good idea to register your music before showcasing it publicly.
